Through DNA testing of James Durdy (me) the link to Niall of the Nine Hostages is set. The Durdy surname does not show up anywhere in my listing in Family TreeDNA research.
The video below explains how important this is to the clan: Niall of the Nine Hostages. 1 out of 5 Irish descendants are related to this clan. And variations of O'Doherty are listed, not Durdy.
A clerk in Virginia in 1831 heard James Doherty say his name but due to the heavy Irish accent, the clerk wrote: Durdy.
And henceforth all of their descendants were misnamed.
This is quite common for the clerks that did their best to understand what people said, but their accents made a marked difference in the spelling of their name.
And many of the immigrants were illiterate and didn't understand how to read or write. And they left a mark on the document instead of a signature.
